Scotch Village, beautifully situated on the River Kennetcook, is part of the old township of Newport which was settled largely by immigrants from Rhode Island.  These arriving in 1761, were among the first English settlers to come to Nova Scotia, after the expulsion of the Acadians in 1755.  It was also in the year 1761, that Colonel Alexander MacNutt, in command of a vessel the “Hopewell”, arrived in Halifax from Northern Ireland with a transport of Scotch Irish immigrants of which a few went to Newport Township.  The origin of the name “Scotch Village”, has not been recorded, it is evident however that it was so called because its early settlers were, chiefly Scotch.
