 We are seeking an Assistant Curator, Museum Guide Interpreters for Fort Edward and at our Museum (281 King Street).

You must be a returning student to a University and High School.

Assistant Curator 

Tentative Start Date:       July 8, 2026

Number of Weeks: 8        Number of Positions: 1

Hourly Wage: $16.75         Hours Per Week: 35

Days:  Wed – Sun            Hours: 9:00am to 4:30pm

Overview

Under the direction of volunteer supervisors, you will be assisting with the Museum Curating, including researching, guiding visitors, leading tours, and participating in museum events.  

Position Duties and Tasks May Include:

Assistant Curator:
  • Restore and conserve museum and gallery artifacts
  • Examine artifacts and determine the most appropriate method of restoration
  • Research origins and history of artifacts
  • Provide advice on display and storage of artifacts to insure proper maintenance and preservation
  • Co-ordinate the storage of collections and setting-up of displays and exhibitions
  • Provide consultation to museums, art galleries or private individuals
  • Research new conservation and restoration techniques
  • Conduct guided tours of museums, gallery exhibitions and historical, heritage and other sites, answer inquiries and provide information
  • Study artifacts to reconstruct past economic, social, political and intellectual life
  • Assist with the planning and development of travelling exhibitions and special events
  • Operate audio-visual equipment
  • Classify and assign registration numbers to artifacts and supervise inventory control
  • Assist in the research, handling and storage of artifacts

Interpretive Guide – Museum

Overview

Under the direction of volunteer supervisors, you will be responsible for the daily operation of a busy museum including researching, guiding visitors, leading tours, and participating in museum events.  

Position Duties and Tasks May Include:

Museum Guide:
  • Greeting visitors
  • Conduct guided tours of museums, gallery exhibitions and historical, heritage and other sites, answer inquiries and provide information
  • Promote the WHHS by posting historical articles on social media
  • Participate in Walking Tours, Farmers Market, Special Events as needed.
  • Maintain the neat and orderly arrangement of the Museum
  • Educates guests on the site’s facilities, historical significance, and overarching themes.
  • Gain knowledge of the various Museum exhibits to tour visitors.
  • Assist with displays of Museum exhibits
  • Display collections in a way that makes them accessible and engaging to the public. 
  • Ensure the safety of the visiting public, while preventing loss or destruction of artefacts / assets
  • Records daily, weekly and monthly attendance statistics, including groups and individuals.

Fort Edward Interpretive Guide

Days:  Wed – Sun                Hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm

Overview

Under the direction of volunteer supervisors, you will be responsible for the daily operation of a Fort Edward National Historic Site, including guiding visitors, leading tours, and participating in museum events.  

Position Duties and Tasks May Include:

Fort Edward Interpretive Guide
  • Welcomes, orients, and informs visitors of the site’s facilities and historical significance and themes. 

  • The student conducts interpretive talks and/or guided tours for groups and individuals when required. Please note that the student at Fort Edward is not required to provide guided tours. Welcome and site orientation of Fort Edward is within the scope of duties. 

  • Provides light custodial and security services to prevent loss defacing or destruction of artefacts / assets, and to ensure the safety of the visiting public. Washroom clean up is required of only students working at the museum. 

  • Records daily, weekly and monthly attendance statistics, including groups and individuals, and reports them to the West Hants Historical Society. The Fort Edward student will report statistics to Parks Canada. All students may also be required to fill out other reports. 

  • Each student may be required to plan, organize and/or participate in one or two fundraisers or events.  Each student may also be required to submit historical stories or something similar for our newsletter or to make up posters or flyers to advertise these events. 

  • Performs other miscellaneous related duties.

Digital Collection Assistant 

Tentative Start Date:           May 18, 2026

Number of Weeks: 12            Number of Positions: 1

Hourly Wage: $16.75             Hours Per Week: 35

Days:  Wed – Sun                Hours: 9:00am to 4:30pm

Overview

The Digital Collection Assistant will be tasked with the job of organizing, cataloguingand digitizing the artifacts
currently housed in the Museum Gallery of the West Hants Historical Society, and in particular paper artifacts
including newspapers, land deeds and other ephemera.

Duties

1. Organize the storage areas in accordance with our preservation standards.
2. Create archival quality digital images of each artifact.
3. Upload the digital images to the museum’s database.
4. Consult the Accession papers to retrieve all information about the artifact.
5. Complete condition report on each artifact.
6. Ensure artifact is properly labelled.
7. Use Internet, in house resources to update artifact record when necessary.
8. Occasionally may write articles for newsletter or blog.


Qualifications
1. University/college student or recent grad, ideally with a concentration in history, archival or library studies.
2. An interest in local history and research.
3. Strong computer skills.
4. Strong writing skills.
5. Attention to detail.
6. Good organization and time management skills since they will be working alone most of the time.
7. Be able to work well with others and as part of a team.
8. French speaking would be an asset, but not required.
