The West Hants Historical Society has employment opportunities for our upcoming season. 

Positions, start dates and duration are determined by available funding. We are seeking Researchers and Museum Guide Interpreters. You must be a returning student to a University and High School.

Museum Guides & Research Assistants

Tentative Start Date:           Mid June, 2026*

Number of Weeks: 12*         Number of Positions: 4

Hourly Wage: $16.75             Hours Per Week: 35

Days:  Wed – Sun                Hours: 9:00am to 5:00pm

*Start date and duration will be determined by the available program funding that we receive.

Overview

Under the direction of a volunteer supervisors, you will be responsible for the daily operation of a busy museum including researching, guiding visitors and tours, and participating in museum events.  Projects will be assigned based on your strengths and interests.

Position Duties and Tasks May Include:

Researcher:
  • Greeting visitors and assist them in researching and finding information in the Genealogy Research Room
  • Answer inquiries about family genealogy, local places, industries, and any other historical information of West Hants
  • Promote the WHHS by posting historical articles on social media
  • Participate in Walking Tours, Farmers Market, Special Events as needed.
  • Maintain the neat and orderly arrangement of the Genealogy Research Room 
  • Record inquiries and visitors for stats.
  • Catalogue records; digitally photographing artifacts, documents, prints in the WHHS Database.
Museum Guide:
  • Engages visitors by providing a warm welcome, comprehensive orientations, and informative tours. 
  • Educates guests on the site’s facilities, historical significance, and overarching themes.
  • Gain knowledge of the various Museum exhibits to tour visitors.
  • Assist with displays of Museum exhibits
  • Display collections in a way that makes them accessible and engaging to the public. 
  • Ensure the safety of the visiting public, while preventing loss or destruction of artefacts / assets
  • Records daily, weekly and monthly attendance statistics, including groups and individuals.

Ideal candidates

  • Do you have a passion for history and heritage?
  • Do you have a positive attitude and are detail oriented?
  • Can you work independently but love to help others?
  • Do you have strong written, verbal and organizational skills?
  • Can you work with digital scanners, graphic software and databases?
  • Parlez-vous français? Pas indispensable, mais un gros avantage!
  • Can you work full required weeks on a weekly schedule from Wednesday to Sunday?
