Interwoven Roots – The West Gore Grove & The Harvey/Blois Connection from 1860 – 2025
Dedication
The Grove has been there for as long as I can remember and for a hundred or more years before that. Born and raised right next door, the Grove offered countless adventures amidst its towering spruce and hemlock trees.
Located at the junction of the Valley and Bennery Roads and the main road through the village of West Gore, the Grove greeted you from every direction. Many a church meeting, Remembrance Day service, and even a wedding took place in the Grove.
Since 1909 the Grove property has belonged to the Harvey family. Originally to John Clark Harvey and his wife Margaret (Maggie); now to their descendants living in the United States. The late Clyde Blois, John and Maggie’s grandson, had acted as the Grove’s caretaker since the Harveys now live so far away. In his advancing years Clyde had worried that the story of the Grove and the Harvey /Blois connection might be lost when he was no longer here.
Consequently, in the spring of 2024 Clyde asked me, as his niece and having strong connections to the Grove, if I would write it all down – a history – before the story was lost. I was honoured to be given this task and got to work right away. Three days before he passed away on June 26, 2024, I read the first few pages to him at his bedside. He smiled his approval.
And so, Uncle Clyde, I dedicate this writing in loving memory of you, my last dear uncle; as well, to my great grandparents whom I never knew, John and Maggie Harvey.
