Nova Scotia which was founded mainly by Rhode Islanders in 1760 and confirmed by a grant from the Crown in 1761. The New Township was located on the eastern side of the Pisiguid (Avon) River and included the tidal marshes and Dyke lands along the Kennetcook, Cogmagun, Herbert and Meander rivers and along part of the northern side of the St. Croix river. These lands had been occupied by Acadian French from the late l600’s until the Acadian deportation in 1755.

A New England style township form of Government was adapted and continued for 100 years from the founding in 1761. It was replaced by a municipal system in 1861 when Newport, Falmouth and Windsor townships and part of the district known as Kempt were incorporated into the District of the Municipality of West Hants
