David Pollard

David Pollard was born in Montreal. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy on 7 September 1957 and attended, first, le College militaire royal de Saint-Jean, in Saint-Jean, Quebec and then the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. He graduated with a BA in Economics and Political Science. He was a member of the college swim team and captain of the college water polo team.

He served thirty-eight years in the navy, traveling extensively on the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. There were many happy hours training cadets in navigation along the shore of the big island of Hawai’i. The young gentlemen were always put ashore in Kealakekua Bay to tidy up the grounds around the monument to Captain Cook. This was balanced by many fishery patrols on the cold, grey Atlantic.

He commanded HMCS Skeena from 1976 to 1978 and HMCS Algonquin from 1980 to 1982.

His last posting was in Oslo, Norway where he was accredited as Canadian Forces Attache to the Kingdoms of Norway, Denmark and Sweden. He speaks English, French and Norwegian.

He and his wife, Esther, were married in Hantsport and have lived there since 1994. David is past president of the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, Avon Valley Golf and Country Club and the Annapolis Valley Senior Men’s Golf Association. He is currently treasurer of the Hantsport & Area Historical Society, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Annapolis Valley Housing Authority and Secretary-Treasurer of the Annapolis Valley Senior Men’s Golf Association.
