Job Title: Website and Networking Assistant (Code NS)

Location: Windsor, NS

Wage: $10.90 per hour at 35 Hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday 9 am to 5 pm

Tentative Start Date: May 30, 2017  Tentative End Date: September 2, 2017

  1. To add historical data to the museum's web site including information about community life and local events around the time of Confederation.
  2. To post information about our local founding families of Windsor, Falmouth Township, Newport Township, and Rawdon Township.
  3. To organize and index the museum's library historical data such as maps, school registers, deeds, ship building etc. that are currently being held in filing cabinets and to integrate this data into one alphabetized system so it can become more user friendly in person and on line.
  4. To improve the historical and family genealogical information presented on the museum's website.
  5. To create an online index for the genealogy library listing all books and documents available at the Museum.
  6. To perform historical research of significant interests of the public, media, and other organizations pertaining to the history of people, places, businesses, and events.
  7. To begin a searchable family database for local cemeteries.
  8. To assist with commemorative and/or other projects and events.
  9. To assist with other duties as needed including Society communication (phone and email), clerical activities, book orders, maintaining visitation statistics, noon hour relief, fund raising, light maintenance activities of the facility.

The West Hants Historical Society is a community-based museum that displays the cultural history of one of Nova Scotia's oldest communities. The society seeks to preserve, present and promote the rich history of Hants County in relation to the larger history of the Province of Nova Scotia and the nation of Canada. The museum has over 1,000 artifacts and approximately 1,500 photos with displays of household, industrial and shipping technologies of a by gone era. The museum also provides genealogical research. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, outgoing individual with an interest in local history, possess exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills, and have a professional and positive work attitude. Strong organization and communications skills and the ability to work independently are essential.  Knowledge of computers is necessary especially with Microsoft Office.  The candidate should enjoy working with people (especially seniors and children), be a flexible and organized worker; have a good vocabulary, and be a comfortable public speaker. Basic to intermediate French (written and verbal) and a knowledge of the history of Hants County would be an asset.

Requirements: The student must be enrolled full-time in an accredited post-secondary institution in the Fall of 2017 and be a permanent resident of Nova Scotia or reside in the province for at least six months prior to this work term. Proof of eligibility will be required in the form of a copy of your acceptance letter and/or copy of transcript(s).

The West Hants Historical Society is a non-profit organization based in Windsor, NS and serving the Avon area. The WHHS has been in operation since 1973, and operates a Museum, genealogy department and the national historic site of Fort Edward in Windsor, NS.
