Job Posting: Summer Service Interpreter, Fort Edward



The West Hants Historical Society is seeking a Summer Service Interpreter for the Fort Edward Blockhouse in Windsor, Hants County, NS.

Job Title: Summer Service Interpreter, Fort Edward

Location: Windsor, NS

Wage: $10.90 per hour at 35 Hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday 9 am to 5 pm

Start Date: June 25, 2017  End Date: September 2, 2017

The Service Interpreter will interpret the history of the Fort Edward National Historic Site, and the Hants County area for visitors in both English and French.  The main responsibilities of this position will be to conduct tours and write newsletter articles, brochures and pamphlets to promote Fort Edward.  He or she may be required to plan and participate in events and/or fundraisers pertaining to the blockhouse.


  1. Welcomes, orients, and informs visitors of the site’s facilities and historical significance and themes.
  2. Provides welcome and orientation talks for groups and individuals.
  3. Helps with fundraising projects and/or events. May be required to prepare English and French brochures, pamphlets, and write newspaper articles to promote Fort Edward.
  4. Provides light custodial and security services to prevent loss defacing or destruction of artefacts / assets, and to ensure the safety of the visiting public.
  5. Keeps the grounds surrounding the Fort clean of debris and garbage.
  6. Performs other miscellaneous related duties.

The ideal candidate should be a dynamic, outgoing individual with an interest in local history, possess exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills, and have a professional and positive work attitude. Strong organization and communications skills and the ability to work independently are essential. Must have fluent English written and orally, intermediate or fluent French and be able to communicate efficiently in both English and French.  Must also pass a security screening test provided by Parks Canada. Please note: candidate chosen by the West Hants Historical Society will also be required to pass a telephone interview in french from a representative of Parks Canada.


Student must be able to work in various weather conditions as at times it is very humid, wet or very cold. Combination of sitting, standing and walking is required but could be revised to accommodate physical barriers.
